Historic Barn: Knoll Farm

Knoll Farm, Fayston, Vermont

This barn was in bad shape when we arrived. The foundation was in terrible shape, and the Sills had become rotten.

Other timbers were very rotten, and the structure overall was unstable due to connection failures. We carefully took it down and did all of the timber frame repairs in our shop, which allowed us to safely work on the pieces in a controlled environment, allowing for the highest quality repairs possible. The other benefit of taking the barn down is it allowed for the foundation to be replaced cost effectively, and for the site to be regraded to allow water to drain away from the building. We took the barn down, repaired it, put it back up, we milled the shiplap Eastern White Pine siding and roof sheathing, installed it, and repaired the historic door and window. We also added a functional and beautiful 16'x24' hemlock timber frame hay storage barn to one side of the barn, and on the other side added a 10'x24' timber frame shed to provide more shelter for the sheep!
